Information Portals
Basic Search Strategy: Two good places to start are with the Free Management Library and Internet Nonprofit Center which provide a comprehensive list of information and resources by category. If you find very little about what you need after checking two or three of the portals listed here, try the Nonprofit Sector Search from the Foundation Center which will scan the entire ".org" internet world or Google.com which is a powerful general search engine. 
     Capaciteria - A database resource index of useful Administrative capacity links for nonprofits with 92 categories of information.

     Free Management Library - The overall goal of the library is to provide leaders and managers (especially those with very limited resources) basic and practical information about business, management and organizations. Many Items in the library are relevant to both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. The site contains 72 major categories and 675 individual topics. The library was developed by Carter McNamara, Authenticity Consulting, LLC and hosted by the Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits (MAP) in St. Paul, Minnesota.

     Internet Nonprofit Center - Has an almost overwhelming FAQ section, with the five main categories Organization, Management, Regulation, Resources and Development and over one hundred sub-categories. The site contains a good keyword search engine, which makes it less overwhelming. The items come from discussions on email lists, in UseNet, and other sources. They also offer a free weekly subscription to the Nonprofit Online News and they maintain a list serve for individuals interested in nonprofit issues. The site is a project of The Evergreen State Society.

     Network For Good - This site is all about effective use of the Internet and technology for nonprofits. It has three main areas of focus; fundraising, volunteers and advocacy. It not only provides information on these topics, but also offers itself as a tool for nonprofits in these three areas. So a nonprofit can register itself to receive online donations through this site, recruit volunteers and collect signatures on petitions. Network for Good, an independent, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded by the AOL Time Warner Foundation and AOL, Inc.; the Cisco Foundation and Cisco Systems, Inc.; and Yahoo! Inc.

     About.com - The nonprofit section of this popular web portal contains links, articles and forums on a wide range of topics of interest to not profits. This site has an excellent section on starting a new nonprofit.

     Chronicle of Philanthropy - This link points you to a list of Internet Resources compiled by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

     Nonprofit Resources - This link points you to a list of Internet Resources compiled by the Foundation Center.

     How the Federal Budget is Shaped to Meet Community Needs - This is a pretty amazing website and the database is full of useful information easily at your fingertips.

     Milano Nonprofit Knowledge Hub - is a free, peer-reviewed site providing links to the most useful web sites, resources and full-text articles for leaders and managers of nonprofit organizations, and researchers of nonprofit management. This site ranks websites based on their usefulness to different audiences.

     The Learning Institute for Nonprofit Organizations - Has useful links on over twenty different topics of interest to nonprofit organizations.

     Yahoo Nonprofit Resources - A directory of Nonprofit Resources from Yahoo.

     CompassPoint - Portal has general news, plus an extensive list of resources covering topics faced by many nonprofits.

     Guidestar - Database of 850,000 nonprofits organizations from the IRS Business Master File and federal form 990. Nonprofit organizations can register free and update their profile. GuideStar's mission is to revolutionize philanthropy and nonprofit practice with information on financial performance and mission. The site also has a resource section with article for both donors and charities.

     idealist.org - This site has links to over 26,000 organizations in over 150 countries and provides tools for nonprofits (starting, running and funding a nonprofit, recruiting and managing volunteers, and technology for nonprofits), career resources, and volunteer opportunities.

     oneworld.net - Social media portal with global scope focused on harnessing the democratic potential of the internet to promote human rights and sustainable development.

     Nonprofit Sector Search Engine - This Foundation Center tool scans through a large index of web sites for the nonprofit sector. This is a good tool for broad scanning because searches may yield several thousand matches. Their Advanced Search feature can be helpful if you are looking for something very specific.

     Google.com - Powerful general purpose search engine.

     KartOO.com - Powerful new type of search engine with visual display.
